The Ganja aluminium smelter, which had been idle for a long time, has started operating again, an official of azerbaijan Aluminium Company said on Wednesday. Exports of alumina from the plant are expected in early 2012.
In early 2009, due to the global financial crisis, the Ganja plant was put on hold. Azerbaijan Aluminum is currently working on the renovation of the alumina plant with an annual capacity of 450,000 tons.
The Ganja aluminium smelter began to reach its first annual capacity of 100,000 tonnes per year last month. Azerbaijan Aluminum will also restart another plant, Sumgait Aluminum Smelter, which has been closed since 2009. The plant has an annual capacity of 60,000 tonnes/year.
